Mahatama Gandhi Memorial Hospital


                In October 1957 luminaries like Shri B.G.Kher, Shri Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Shri G.B.Pant, Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur, Shri J.R.D. Tata, Dr. Zakir Husain, Trustees of the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, The Bombay Mill owner’s Association and the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation & Government of Bombay resolved to provide funds and start the Mahatama Gandhi Memorial Trust Hospital to cater to the health needs of industrial workers.


                MGM Hospital is a tripartite trust hospital under the ESI Scheme. The Trust is constituted by Millowners’ Association, Government of Maharashtra & Employees’ State Insurance Corporation. It is governed by the Board of Management and the Committee of Board of Management.

The Board of Management (BOM):


            The Board of Management which takes policy decisions consists of representatives from Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (Director General, ESI Corporation is Chairman,    ESIC Medical Commissioner is member), ESI Govt. of Maharashtra, (Secretary, Public Health Department & Commissioner, ESI Scheme are members) & Mill owners’ Associations, (Secretary, Millowners’ Association & currently Shri Manharlal Shah are members).

Committee Board of Management(CBM):


           Committee Board of Management consists of representatives from Government of Maharashtra (Commissioner, ESI Scheme is Chairman),  Employees’  State Insurance Corporation (Regional Director, ESI Corporation is member), Millowners’ Association (Secretary, Millowners’ Association is member) &   MGM Hospital, Parel (Medical Superintendent, MGM Hospital is Secretary)

Raising of the initial fund for the hospital:


                Required land for the Hospital amounting to Rs.12.00 lakhs was acquired by the Govt. of Maharashtra.
         Millowners’ Association contributed Rs. 54,75,000/- for the construction of the hospital through Mahatma Gandhi Nidhi Trust
              
          ESI Corporation provided required equipments/machinery. The Seven hundred bedded hospital was commissioned in 1962 in the hospital campus measuring 42,888 sq.mt. (10 acre). It had 18,331 sq.mtr. area of hospital building and 24557 sq.mtr. area for residential and other buildings.                        
As per the Part II-2G (i,ii) of the Trust Deed of MGM Hospital, all the expenditure is borne by the Govt. of Maharashtra initially, to be shared between the ESI Corporation and Govt. of Maharashtra in the usual ratio of 7:1. As per the Trust Deed, Millowners’ Association is exempted from sharing any expenditure. Accordingly, this hospital is receiving 100% grant-in-aid from the Govt. of Maharashtra.
